명성교회 및 명성교회 출신 일부 성도들이 한글과 영문으로 구성한 고백문을 발표했다. 이번 고백문은 2005년 명성교회가 설립한 크리스천 글로벌 리더 양성기관인 명성다윗아카데미 졸업생 131명 가운데 62명이 참여했다. 아래는 고백문 전문이다.
주여! 이 작은 자들의 외침을 들으소서!
(명성교회 및 명성교회 출신 일부 성도들의 고백문)
최근 명성교회의 후임 청빙 과정을 겪으며 저희는 깊은 슬픔과 자책에 빠졌습니다. 나아가 저희는 명성교회 안에서 반성 없는 침묵을 깨고자 먼저 작은 용기를 내었습니다. 이 글은 결코 명성교회를 혼란시키거나 분열시키고자 하는 목적이 아닙니다. 비록 생각은 서로 다를지라도 자성의 목소리를 통하여 스스로를 돌아보고자 함이며, 이는 교회가 다시 온전한 모습으로 회복되기를 원하는 간절함과 교회를 사랑하는 마음에서 비롯된 것입니다.
저희는 명성교회로 말미암아 상처 입은 한국교회와 모든 분들께 깊이 사죄합니다.
저희는 명성교회의 잘못된 판단에 대하여 침묵했던 것을 하나님 앞에 회개합니다.
저희는 명성교회의 후임 청빙 과정과 결과에 분명한 잘못들이 있다고 생각합니다.
저희 중에는 여전히 명성교회에 출석하는 자들도 있고, 지금은 해외 등 타지역의 교회를 섬기는 자들도 많지만, 그리스도의 한 몸 된 지체로서 공교회적 책임감을 가지고, 교회나 목회자의 권위 아래서가 아니라, 오직 성경과 그리스도 안에서 양심의 자유에 의존하여, 아래와 같이 고백합니다.
1. 우리 명성교회는 깊이 반성해야 합니다.
명성교회는 한국교회의 가슴을 멍들게 했습니다. 그동안 우리는 하나님의 말씀인 성경에 의지하여 하나님의 뜻을 구하기보다는, 목사님께만 신앙의 최종 결정권을 맡기지는 않았는지 되돌아보아야 합니다. 우리는 잘못된 결정을 내릴 수 있고, 가슴 아프지만 목사님도 실수할 수 있음을 받아들여야 합니다. 건강한 교회가 되려면 교회가 잘못된 길을 갈 때, 겸손한 마음으로 무엇이 잘못되었는지 말할 수 있는 성도들의 용기가 필요합니다. 또한 교회의 구조적 한계를 극복할 수 있는 소통과 견제의 기능이 절실히 필요합니다. 그래서 우리의 자정의 능력을 회복하여 한 마음으로 다시금 “오직 주님”만, “칠년을 하루 같이” 바라보아야 합니다.
2. 사랑하는 김삼환 목사님과 김하나 목사님께 호소합니다.
김삼환 목사님께서는 저희에게 다윗과 같은 지도자가 되라고 늘 말씀하셨습니다. 저희는 하나님께 순종한 다윗의 처음 길과, 반대로 불순종한 다윗의 나중 길도 보았습니다. 무엇보다 이러한 다윗의 인생의 여정이 계속하여 두 분에게 거울이 되어, 끝까지 하나님께서 인정하시는 길로만 걸어가시면 좋겠습니다. 그리고 세상과 교계의 소리에 더욱 귀를 기울이시어, 잘못된 부분을 솔직히 인정하여 용서를 구하시고, 총회와 노회의 법과 질서에 순응하여 한국교회 전체를 유익하게 하시면 좋겠습니다.
3. 한국교회 성도님들께 명성교회를 위한 기도와 견책을 부탁드립니다.
명성교회의 주님은 오직 “하나님”이십니다. 지금도 명성교회 안에는 하나님의 뜻을 구하기 위하여 고민하며 자신을 성찰하는 수많은 신실한 그리스도인이 있다는 사실을 기억해 주십시오. 하나님 나라는 결코 교회 건물이나 재정이나 모인 성도수의 많고 적음에 있지 않음을 저희는 믿습니다. 또한 사람의 실패, 교회의 실패가 결코 하나님 나라의 실패가 될 수 없다고 믿습니다. 명성교회가 이번 일을 계기로 오히려 잘못된 점을 반성하고 영적으로 회복되는 다음 세대가 될 수 있도록 다 함께 기도와 견책을 부탁드립니다.
이러한 저희의 고백은 세상과 교계의 우려를 겸손하게 받아들이며 앞으로 나아가려는 작은 노력이며, 일그러지고 흐릿해진 명성교회의 공교회성과 순수한 신앙을 다시 바로 세워, 다시금 한국교회에 빛과 소금의 역할을 온전히 감당하도록 하고 싶은 작은 자들의 외침입니다.
이제부터 저희도 명성교회의 잘못에 함께 아파하며 참회하겠습니다.
이제라도 정말 명성교회가 회개한 다윗의 모습을 따르면 좋겠습니다.
이를 통해 예수 그리스도가 진짜 주님 되신 우리 교회가 되면 좋겠습니다.

Oh Lord! Please hear our cries, the cries of little ones!
(Confession by some of current and former members of Myungsung Presbyterian Church)
After the recent appointment of the successor at Myungsung Presbyterian Church, we have been deeply grieved and overwhelmed with the sense of remorse. We have summoned our little courage to break the silence of Myungsung Church and its members that do not regret such a decision. The intent of our confession is not to disturb the Myungsung Church community or to divide its members, but to voice our concerns to reflect on our hearts in spite of our differences. This confession is the embodiment of our desperate hope for the full restoration of Myungsung Church and the expression of our love for the church.
We sincerely apologize to the Korean Church and to all those who were hurt by Myungsung Church.
We repent before God that we kept our silence over Myungsung Church’s wrong decision.
We believe that Myungsung Church unmistakably made wrong decisions in recruiting and appointing the successor.
Although some of us still attend Myungsung Church and a good portion of us have moved to serve other churches in other places of Korea or overseas, as part of the Body of Christ, we all feel collectively responsible for the Universal Church. Therefore, we decide not to rely on the authority of a single church or a pastor, but on the Bible and the freedom of conscience we have in Jesus Christ to confess as follows.
1. Our Myungsung Presbyterian Church should seriously reflect on its responsibility.
Myungsung Church bruised the hearts of many churches in Korea. We should reflect on ourselves to judge whether or not we have blindly entrusted the pastor with full authority for all faith matters instead of reading the Bible—the Word of God—to seek the Lord’s will. It may be painful to acknowledge, but we must accept the fact that church members as well as pastors can make mistakes. What makes a church healthy is the courage of its members who can humbly speak the truth about the church’s problems whenever the church goes in the wrong way. Our church critically needs a system of check and balance and needs to communicate with the outer world in order to overcome its structural limitations. Thus, we need to recover our ability to reform our church on our own, which will allow us to once again look to “Only Lord,” “Seven Years Like a Day.”
2. We appeal to our dear pastors, Pastor Kim Sam Hwan and Pastor Kim Hana.
Pastor Kim Sam Hwan has always encouraged us to be leaders like David. We have seen that David obeyed God in his early days, but disobeyed God in his later days. Above all, we hope that David's life's journey may serve as a mirror to Pastor Kim Sam Hwan and Pastor Kim Hana, so they will only walk in the path of the Lord until the end. We ask Pastor Kim Sam Hwan and Pastor Kim Hana to pay more attention to the voices of the world and other churches, to honestly acknowledge their wrongs, and to ask for forgiveness. We ask that they will conform to the law and order of the denomination and presbytery for the good of the Korean Church.
3. We ask the Korean Church community for your prayers and rebuke for our church.
The only head of Myungsung Presbyterian Church is our Lord God. Please remember that there are still many faithful Christians in Myungsung Church who are troubled by the church’s decision and continue to reflect on themselves to seek God's will. We believe that the kingdom of God is never in a church building, a church’s finances, or the size of its congregation. We also believe that a human error or a failure of a single church can never be a failure of the kingdom of God. We would like to ask all of you to pray for and rebuke Myungsung Church so that we can repent of our wrongs and be spiritually restored to stand stronger as the next generation of faith.
This confession is our small effort to humbly accept the concerns of the world and the churches and thus to move forward. It is our cry to restore the distorted and obscured sense of the Universal Church within Myungsung Church, so that it may fulfill its role as salt and light in the Korean Church again.
From now on, we will join everyone in grieving for and repenting of Myungsung Church’s wrongs.
And from now on, we would like Myungsung Church to follow the example of David who sincerely repented before God.
Through this, we hope that our church will be restored as a church where Jesus Christ is truly the Lord.
